Demystifying Data Storytelling

When someone says “tell me a story” in a business setting, they aren’t asking you to crack open a fairy tale. They’re looking for a data story designed to get their organization on the same page, provide direction and deliver messages that resonate with their audience.

But what exactly is data storytelling? And why does it matter?

In this foundational session, you’ll learn the answers to these questions, as well as the role you play in creating a story that connects and inspires.

Fee per participant:

$99 incl HST

Workshop Details

In this session, you will gain an understanding of Storylytics’s core data storytelling frameworks and how to apply them. You’ll learn:

  • What “insight” really means in the context of a story
  • How to recognize natural biases
  • The structure and science behind a data story
  • The relationship between your data, the narrative and the supporting visuals
  • How to deliver a story that connects with decision makers through the POET Technique™

Participants receive a certificate of completion, identifying their commitment to building their data storytelling knowledge.

Getting Started – Meet your Audience on Their Terms

All good data stories start at the end. Are you wondering how that can be?

By the end of a well-constructed data story, you will have effectively communicated your analysis. Resonance has happened, inspiration has struck, roads forward are (hopefully) being paved.

But to get to all the good stuff that happens at the end, you have to connect with your audience. And to connect with an audience, you have to understand them.

Fee per participant:

$249 + HST ($281.37)

Workshop Details

In this workshop you’ll learn the three key audience truths you need to know before starting to build a data story, and one very important question you’ll need answered for each truth.

You’ll also learn that it’s not your job to give the audience what they want; your job is to figure out what they need and give them an effective story capable of driving change.

Understanding your audience and where they are coming from is one of the most important parts of effective data storytelling. In this workshop, which takes place over two sessions, you’ll learn:

  • The three truths you need to understand about your audience
  • The questions to ask to uncover the truths
  • How the truths will affect your analytic process, story development and delivery

“Laura created a custom workshop for our Marketing and Data Analytics team, effectively incorporated our individualized needs into the session, AND matched them to the varying skill-sets of our team – no easy task! Her innate ability to share her own past experiences kept us engaged throughout the session, and she handled every challenge we brought forth with ease. Our team all walked away with a fresh perspective on storytelling and were immediately able to put the POET technique into practice. We look forward to additional coaching from Laura as we continue our storytelling journey.”

— VP, Client Operations

“With any training the true benefit and value can only be measured after the session has been completed and people have an opportunity to put what they learned into practice. Laura collaborated with us to develop and facilitate a training session for our marketing team, focused on using storytelling to “make a better impact with data”. My team and I have effectively leveraged the approaches taught by Laura. As a result of what we learned, we are becoming more effective in our ability to influence business direction and our drive for results.”
