When someone says “tell me a story” in a business setting, they aren’t asking you to crack open a fairy tale. They’re looking for a data story designed to get their organization on the same page, provide direction and deliver messages that resonate with their audience.
But what exactly is data storytelling? And why does it matter?
In this foundational session, you’ll learn the answers to these questions, as well as the role you play in creating a story that connects and inspires.
In this session, you will gain an understanding of Storylytics’s core data storytelling frameworks and how to apply them. You’ll learn:
Participants receive a certificate of completion, identifying their commitment to building their data storytelling knowledge.
All good data stories start at the end. Are you wondering how that can be?
By the end of a well-constructed data story, you will have effectively communicated your analysis. Resonance has happened, inspiration has struck, roads forward are (hopefully) being paved.
But to get to all the good stuff that happens at the end, you have to connect with your audience. And to connect with an audience, you have to understand them.
In this workshop you’ll learn the three key audience truths you need to know before starting to build a data story, and one very important question you’ll need answered for each truth.
You’ll also learn that it’s not your job to give the audience what they want; your job is to figure out what they need and give them an effective story capable of driving change.
Understanding your audience and where they are coming from is one of the most important parts of effective data storytelling. In this workshop, which takes place over two sessions, you’ll learn:
Storylytics founder Laura Warren, who has been referred to as “the data whisperer,” is well-known in the data storytelling community for her creation of the POET Technique™—a highly effective communication framework that helps to connect audiences with data that matters.
POET, which stands for Purpose, Observation, Explanation and Transition, teaches you how to tackle communication from the audience’s point of view, and is relevant to multiple forms of communication.
In this online workshop, you’ll learn how to apply the POET Technique to your data stories, to better deliver insights and influence change. You’ll learn how to use titles, colour and commentary in story-telling slides, as well as how to structure your emails to encourage action.
By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:
Audience truths are vital to effective data storytelling (as you’ll learn in Meet Your Audience on Their Terms), and the POET Technique™ is best practice for visual communication. So what happens when audience truths meet POET? This is where the magic really happens.
Working with a small group of like-minded peers, you will learn how to build an analytic narrative to deliver findings to both internal and external audiences, honing skills introduced in your first workshop on audience understanding. Through a combination of hands-on group experiences and case study work, you’ll complete the workshop with a deeper understanding of how to marry audience truths and the POET Technique™ for maximum benefit in practical application.
Building on what you have already learned about getting to the heart of audience truths and how POET works, this workshop takes this skillset a step further. By the end of this session, you will be able to:
Note: this session will be conducted in two workshops over two consecutive weeks, and includes a 60-minute 1:1 session with Storylytics founder, Laura Warren.
If you’ve been applying the fundamentals you learned in previous Storylytics sessions, this one is for you. With this masterclass, you will take the foundational skills you’ve developed and deepen your ability to connect with decision-makers (and make an even greater impact!)
In a small-group environment, you will explore the three applications of the POET Technique™ – real-time presentation (virtual or in-person), circulation of material and email communication—with like-minded peers. Combining analytics and communication, this is POET practice at its core, allowing you to fine-tune your skills in a collaborative, far-from-theoretical setting.
Set yourself up to make an even greater impact by honing your data presentation techniques and be ready to mentor others. At the end of this session, you will be able to:
Note: this session will be conducted in two workshops over two consecutive weeks, and includes an additional 60-minute 1:1 session with Storylytics founder, Laura Warren.

“Laura created a custom workshop for our Marketing and Data Analytics team, effectively incorporated our individualized needs into the session, AND matched them to the varying skill-sets of our team – no easy task! Her innate ability to share her own past experiences kept us engaged throughout the session, and she handled every challenge we brought forth with ease. Our team all walked away with a fresh perspective on storytelling and were immediately able to put the POET technique into practice. We look forward to additional coaching from Laura as we continue our storytelling journey.”
“With any training the true benefit and value can only be measured after the session has been completed and people have an opportunity to put what they learned into practice. Laura collaborated with us to develop and facilitate a training session for our marketing team, focused on using storytelling to “make a better impact with data”. My team and I have effectively leveraged the approaches taught by Laura. As a result of what we learned, we are becoming more effective in our ability to influence business direction and our drive for results.”
