Data. It’s everywhere, it’s evolving, and it is enabling no end of analytics and insight for the business community. Yet the feeling of data rich, information poor still prevails. Not surprisingly, the cry to close that gap has also never been louder.
Data Storytelling holds the answer to this challenge.
Storytelling has always been about the exchange of ideas. In Data Storytelling, our ideas are driven by analyses and insights. Effective data stories combine analyses, narrative, and visualization to tell the tale. But as visualization alone can be interpreted in different ways by different people, building an effective narrative is the means to get your point across effectively.
It is in the narrative where data stories go from good to great. Strong data storytellers focus on connecting the dots. Connecting their audience to the data, and connecting insights to action. It is only when an audience understands how a finding impacts their business that change will occur. This is where the data storyteller shines.
In this workshop, we examine the relationship between analysis, narrative, and visuals, and explore the importance of narrative – your words and explanation – in driving action and change. Time honoured storytelling techniques are reframed in the context of data, and you will develop new ways of communicating your findings and connecting with your audience. Most importantly, feedback from previous sessions indicates people have confidently and successfully applied their new skills on the job.
